Navigate the challenges of orbital and peri-orbital injuries and practice effective evaluations and treatments using human anatomical specimens

Evaluating and treating orbital and mid-facial fractures and peri-orbital soft tissue injuries can be challenging even for experienced surgeons.
Landmarks within the orbit can be difficult to visualize and relationships between important structures remain unclear; the globe and its associated adnexal structures (e.g., extraocular muscles, lacrimal system, and eyelids) are fragile and highly specialized; the orbit is not completely treated by any one specialty but shared by many.
As a result, there is much debate about which orbital injuries should be repaired, with what surgical approach, and when the repair should occur.
This two-and-a-half-day course will address each of these challenges through an extensive hands-on learning program taught by national and international experts representing all CMF specialties (oral and maxillofacial surgery, otolaryngology, plastic and reconstructive surgery, ophthalmology, and oculoplastics).
During hands-on lab sessions, participants will have the opportunity to practice fracture repair on human anatomical specimens using patient-specific implants designed for each fractured specimen. Practical lab experiences within this course replicate realistic/commonplace midface and orbital fractures seen routinely in hospitals.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to Define preoperative planning methods and outcome analysis Identify relevant surgical and radiologic anatomy of the orbit and diagnose/evaluate common orbital/peri-orbital bony and soft tissue injuries Describe and differentiate the surgical approaches and reconstructive procedures that are most effective in correcting specific orbital and peri-orbital deformities Recognize the common complications associated with the treatment of these conditions and their accepted management Assess potential benefits of an interdisciplinary approach for optimal reconstruction and rehabilitative treatment of patients with orbital injuries Interpret how recent technological advances can impact on the intraoperative treatment of these injuries Demonstrate psychomotor skills in the practical application of traditional and endoscopic surgical approaches
Senior resident PGY 4 or above.

Attending surgeons in the fields of oral and maxillofacial surgery, otolaryngology, plastic and reconstructive surgery, ophthalmology, and oculoplastics. Senior residents (PGY 4 and above) and fellows may also find this course beneficial.
