AO Trauma Hand NA Launches a New Residents Online Curriculum

Presentation and discussion series for improving Trauma Hand practice

15 October 2020

The AO Trauma Hand NA education committee has and continues to contribute to innovation and ideation in learning, like their counterparts in other clinical divisions. Engaging learning interactions coupled with inclusion of hand therapists as faculty have made the online learning experiences developed and delivered by the Hand education committee a valuable addition to the AO Trauma Hand NA portfolio.

On Thursday September 10th at 7.00 PM EST, we proudly launched our pilot online residents’ curriculum that extends for 10 weeks.  Each session includes presentation of principles followed by case discussions to emphasize the application of the principles and analysis of patient problems and scenarios presented.  In addition, occupational therapists share their perspectives on post -operative follow up and treatments.  Each session focuses on specific fracture types and the follows a structure that includes discussions related to

  • Anatomy / Biomechanics / Kinematics
  • Mechanism of Injury
  • Patho- anatomy
  • Imaging
  • Role of Non-Operative Treatment
  • Role of Surgery
  • Rehabilitation

The key characteristics of this online curriculum is the pairing up of experienced hand education committee members/faculty with new faculty, who have not been exposed to AO’s teaching methods and training.   This partnership has been highly successful and launches a mentor/mentee relationship that embodies the value surgeons see in being a part of the AO NA community.    The mentors also help with moderating the sessions and facilitating critical thinking through Q & A and chat discussions.  The program has been highly successful and has engaged an average of 150 learners per session.

Kudos and thanks to the AO Trauma Hand NA education committee and to all the new faculty who participated successfully.
