Hand Surgery Essentials

Online learning series for resident education developed by the North America Hand Education Committee (NAHEC)

22 December 2020

This series features ten live online didactic sessions which highlight anatomy, biomechanics, kinematics, and management of various conditions in hand surgery.  Each 60-minute session incorporates essentials of condition-specific hand therapy as well.

NAHEC used the series also as an opportunity to be all inclusive, bringing in new faculty and pairing them with a mentor. In addition, a hand therapist was added as part of the faculty for each session. Hand therapists are invited to participate in the series as well as surgical residents.

The Hand Surgery Essentials Series will include local practical lab sessions to offer opportunities for residents to practice skills. Lab exercises will be comparable to the ones offered in the traditional one-day Hand courses that are a part of the AO North America (AO NA) learning portfolio.  Boston and Houston have been identified as the first pilot locations. Each location will run the events simultaneously and the synchronous experience will be facilitated and managed by a session moderator.
