Ethics and Content Validation Subcomittee (ECVSC)

The ECVSC is a standing subcommittee established by the EAB, consisting of one representative from each clinical division selected by their respective Education Committee. The ECVSC is responsible for ensuring all educational activities meet the criteria for accreditation and content is objective, fair balanced, scientifically based on best available evidence and without commercial bias or influence. The ECVSC serves as a resource to AO NA leadership, committees, faculty, and staff on regulatory issues, compliance or policy issues.

Dr. Fred G. Fedok is the Immediate Past President of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS). Dr. Fedok is widely published and lectures extensively nationally and internationally. He is in private practice on the Gulf Coast in Foley, Alabama and is Adjunct Professor of Surgery at the University of South Alabama. His innovative and successful practice focuses on the individual needs of each patient in facial cosmetic and reconstructive situations. Dr. Fedok is continuously seeking the most advanced forms of treatment, correction and rejuvenation techniques to ensure patients receive top-quality care and outcomes. Terry Axelrod holds the rank of Professor of Surgery at the University of Toronto and continues with a clinical practice in Upper Extremity Trauma and Reconstruction at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. Sunnybrook remains the busiest Level ! Trauma centre in Canada. Dr. Axelrod has a long affiliation with AO Trauma North America and has served as faculty, chair and co-chair at a multitude of courses across North America, Europe and Asia. To date, he is author or co-author of approximately 50 peer review publications, 16 Book chapters and several manuscripts.

Dr David Hubbard hails from Morgantown, West Virginia. He is Professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at West Virginia University Hospital and Chief of the Orthopaedic Trauma Service. He is board-certified and fellowship trained orthopedic trauma surgeon. He completed his orthopedic residency at West Virginia University Hospital in 1994. He then completed his orthopedic trauma fellowship at the prestigious University of Washington at Harbourview Medical Center in Seattle, Washington. Dr Hubbard has been involved with AO his entire career serving as faculty member, chairman of multiple courses in North America and Europe and on multiple committees. He also served as a Trustee for the AO Foundation. Dr Hubbard is currently a busy orthopedic trauma surgeon and educator at West Virginia University Hospital.

Dr. Spencer Johnston is currently the James and Marjorie Waggoner Professor and head of the Department of Small Animal Medicine and Surgery at the University of Georgia. He is a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons, and is co-editor the surgery textbook Veterinary Surgery: Small Animal, and co-author of the fifth edition of Brinker, Piermattei, and Flo’s Handbook of Small Animal Orthopedics and Fracture Repair. His research background and interests include the treatment of osteoarthritis, particularly with nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs. Dr. Johnston graduated from the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in 1986, and was a faculty member at the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech from 1990-2003. He entered private surgical practice in 2003, and returned to academic veterinary medicine by joining the faculty of the University of Georgia in 2007. Dr. Johnston is a past member of the Board of Regents for the American College of Veterinary Surgeons, and currently serves the profession as a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association’s Council on Education.

Dr. Mark Lee is Professor and Vice Chairman of Education in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento. His clinical specialty focus is orthopaedic trauma, especially lower extremity trauma, and he oversees a national and regional referral practice for complex nonunions and malunions. He is a longtime member of the AOTK (AOTC) Lower Extremity Expert Groups. He has an active research program that focuses on bone regeneration utilizing mesenchymal stem cells, especially for long bone defects, and on the interplay between biomechanics and fracture healing responses.

Dr. Lee has a special interest in graduate medical education. He is the Chairman of the Education Advisory Board for AO North America and a multi-term member of the AO Foundation Residents Task Force. He served two terms on the AOTNA Education committee. He is the Orthopaedic Trauma Fellowship Director at UC Davis, and is the prior Chair of the Fellowship and Career Choices Committee of the Orthopaedic Trauma Association (OTA).

Dr. Rizzo obtained his medical degree at Temple University in Philadelphia. He completed his orthopedic surgery residency at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina and his hand/microvascular surgery fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. After being on staff at Duke University from 2002-5, he joined the faculty at Mayo, where he has since remained. He is a professor of orthopedic surgery and serves as chair of the hand surgery division. Dr. Rizzo is on the AO NA hand education committee and AO NA ethics, validation and content subcommittee (ECVSC). He has also completed the Faculty Education Program.

Charisse brings over 30 years of diversified experience in academia, not-for-profit, and the for-profit industry of continuing medical education to AO North America (AONA). Her professional experience includes 20 years of overseeing, managing, developing, and delivering quality continuing professional development programs for healthcare professionals and patient education and advocacy programs. Charisse’s understanding of regulatory compliance guidelines, adult learning principles, and educational design formats has led her to obtain two reaccreditations for AONA and two for one Communication Company. Her leadership experience includes appointment to Accreditation Council for Continuing Education (ACCME) Site Surveyor committee, a national continuing medical education organization, as well as service on a regional community health center board and a community board for student enrichment programs. She is also an accomplished, grant solicitor of major pharmaceutical funding for education activities. Prior to joining AONA, she spent the past 10 years in managerial positions such as; Accreditation Manager, Account Director, Education Compliance Officer, and Director of Education at several for-profit companies. Her primary role involved overseeing and managing multiple projects, re-selling and up-selling continuing education programs. Charisse brings strong project management, innovation and leadership skills to AO North as evidenced by her participation on the Greater Philadelphia Health Action Board of Directors and The House of Bread, Inc. Board of Directors. Charisse received a B.S. in Marketing with a minor in Management from Philadelphia College of Textiles and Sciences, and a Certificate of Completion in Healthcare Management from Philadelphia College of Textiles and Sciences.

A passionate learning strategist, educator who brings more than 20 years of experience and expertise in all areas of education including traditional and online learning, curriculum design and development, measurement and evaluation methods, instructional design, course design and delivery, needs assessments development, process improvement planning, the use of technology in design and delivery of education. She is an Educational Technology expert who has been involved in implementing online learning systems, learning object repositories, integrating technology solutions in learning, leading the design and implementation of tools related to social learning and mobile learning. A nationally and internationally recognized leader and consultant in continuing medical education, she has a deep interest in knowledge management and its effective translation to healthcare practice, with several committee and advisory board appointments, and awards. Dr. Subramaniam has worked in several capacities in education and training in academic, corporate, government, publishing, and not-for-profit organizations.
Before joining AO North America, she served as Principal, Learning and Change within the Premier Research Services group at Premier Inc., where she led the development and implementation of an education, quality improvement, training and Implementation research strategy aligned with the needs of over 3000 hospitals within the Premier network, including business development and marketing. She also served as the Assistant Dean for Continuing Medical Education at the Duke School of Medicine and was the Assistant Director for the Center for Educational Excellence at the DCRI managing over 450 CPD programs including several systems level quality improvement initiatives. In her leadership role within the Duke Center for Educational Excellence, Chitra lead several educational implementation projects and all of the PI/QI efforts working in collaboration with the Health system, the different Duke Departments, research networks and community organizations. She has worked also with the American Society for Clinical Pathology as the Director of Educational Design and Technology, a master designer for IBM, AT & T, CMS and several academic, corporate, government and non-for profit organizations. Her interests include creation and management of knowledge systems for the delivery of outcomes-based education, E-learning, educational research and quality improvement CE.
